As January approaches it not only brings us the New Year, but also brings a surprise for all the bibliophiles out there. The Pink City welcomes all the book freaks with open arms for its 11th edition of Zee Jaipur Literature Festival, the world’s largest free literary fest from 25th to 29thJanuary, 2018 at its designated abode the Diggi Palace Hotel, Jaipur.
The first list of 60 speakers has been announced and there are a few we are really looking forward to hear:
Akhil Sharma
He has been a winner of some very prestigious awards like the 2001 PEN/Hemingway Award for his book The Obedient Father and also won the Folio Prize (2015) and International Dublin Literary Award (2016) for his book Family Life about an Indian immigrant family in the United States. This literary genius is not only an author a New York Times Best Book of the Year but is also a professor of creative writing at Rutgers University–Newark.
RupiKaur
This young blood hails from Punjab and is a Canadian poet, writer, performer and illustrator. She moved to Canada when she was only four and has since written poems as not just a hobby but as means to communicate. She rose to prominence in 2014 when she self-published her book of poetry and prose titled Milk and Honeywhich sold millions of copies and was the NYT Best Seller in 2016. Her poetry is simple yet hard-hitting andsways upon the themes of love, loss, violence and feminism.
SujathaGidla
Caste discrimination sounds like it was a phenomenon worlds ago, but the truth is that it is still prevalent in the Indian Society. SujathaGidla writes about her account on caste discrimination as an untouchable from Andhra Pradesh in her memoir Ants Among Elephants that has just released this December and was the most awaited book of 2017. She currently works as a conductor at the New York Subway.
Tom Stoppard
Sir Tom Stoppard also known as Britain’s greatest living dramatist. He originates from Czech and is today 80 years old which makes him one of the most senior authors to preside over JLF. He was recently awarded the David Cohen Prize for lifetime achievement in literature and has been writing for six decades for stage, film and television. His list of achievements cannot fit in one article.
Helen Fielding
The English born author is best known for her fictional character Bridget Jonesthat is one of the top ten novels which defines the 20th century best. She tends to stay away from limelight. She has also been the Sunday Times Bestseller for six months and has won the British Book of the Year in 1997.
Michael Ondaatje
The Sri Lankan born Canadian author who has written a multiplicity of novels that ranges from poetry to fiction and to non-fiction. He is best known for his novel The English Patient (1992) that was made into a film by the same name in 1996. He is the Winner of the Man Booker Prize, the Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Award and the Prix Médicis Étranger for his work in fiction. Hewill release his new Novel Warlight in May 2018.
B N Goswamy
He is not only an author but is also an awardee of Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan. His latest work Manaku of Guler that was released this September is a reconstruction of the life of the prodigious Indian artist Manaku.
Amy Tan
The Chinese born American author writes her account of multiculturalism and relationships. She has written about cultural identity and Chinese stereotypes. Her best-known work is The Joy Luck Club (1993) that was also adapted for the screen. She released Where the Past Beginsi this September, which is a series of autobiographical essays.
Peter Bos
He hails from Netherlands and is a portrait photographer known best for his portrayal of the Konyaks a Naga tribe covered from head to toe with tattoos. He travels from place to place capturing different cultures and societies.
Pico Iyer
The British born American essayist and novelist has parents that hail from India giving him the Indian ancestry, which makes him very multi cultured and a travel expert. This is reflected in his writing of non-fiction. He is a frequent traveler who also given some ground breaking Ted talks. His most notable work is The Art of Stillness(2014),to stay still in an extremely fast pacing world.
